Taste School for children born in 2022
Piparminttu Kekseliäs has lost her sense of taste. Only yesterday, bananas tasted lovely, but today they were icky. It was as if the world had done a somersault, with flavors playing hide-and-seek with her. During the day, Piparminttu truly realizes what tasting is all about.
The Taste School invites children born in 2022 to explore flavors. During the workshop, children get to help Piparminttu Kekseliäs. It is about nothing less than finding the lost sense of taste.
The Taste School held at the museum is part of the City of Helsinki’s Culture Kids service, which is free of charge for Helsinki-based families. Culture Kids receive invitations to two events annually until the child starts school. All children born in Helsinki from 2020 onwards are included. The workshop Piparminttu and the Mystery of Tasting is organized exclusively for children born in 2022.
Registration and dates: Register your child for the activity and come explore the museum in a fun way. We are organizing several workshops in the spring; specific dates can be found in the City of Helsinki’s registration system.
Please note: Food ingredients are used in the workshop. We can accommodate allergies only to a limited extent. The ingredients used in the Taste School are banana (grape), rye crispbread (also gluten-free), cheese (pickled cucumber), and arugula (dark chocolate). The items used for crafting vary (grape, blueberry, cucumber, melon, apple).
Partner: The Finnish Society for Food Education Ruukku collaborates with the Hotel and Restaurant Museum in the Culture Kids program by providing materials for workshops and for distribution to families. Ruukku is a national expert organization in food education that promotes diverse eating habits, a balanced relationship with food, and food courage among children and youth.
Food courage means curiosity and the daring to eat different kinds of foods. This is a skill that can and should be practiced. Learning food courage is particularly relevant in childhood, as many children are naturally hesitant toward new foods.
