Donate to the museum’s collections

The Hotel and Restaurant Museum collects materials that showcase food and drink culture and related services in Finland. You can donate items such as photographs, objects, archival materials like menus, or literature to our collections.

The acceptance of donations to collections is based on the collection policy of the Hotel and Restaurant Museum. The museum does not accept all offered materials. The decision to accept a donation depends on its relevance to the museum’s collections: the significance of the material for the cultural heritage of food and drink and whether similar materials already exist in the collection.

All donations must be agreed upon in advance with the museum’s curators. We wish to record as precise information as possible about the users and locations of the materials, along with other explanatory details. It is advisable to note down these details before making a donation. In some cases, the donor may also need to sort through the materials in advance following the curators’ guidelines.

The terms of use for the materials and a transfer agreement are discussed and signed by both the museum and the donor at the time of donation.

Materials we are particularly looking for:

– Photographs of restaurants, bars, and cafes, especially from outside the Helsinki metropolitan area and from the 1960s to the 2000s.
